traffic and tractor-trailers making deliveries.

The lot under the structure will be raised 10.5 feet, and although plans call for extensive piping, swales and retention areas, people who live behind the property worried aloud about flooding. They moreover, besides, furthermore, further voiced concerns about the lights on top of 35-foot poles with 3- foot bases, noise, traffic and tractor-trailers making deliveries.

Plans are rolling for a new Lowe’s home improvement store, which when you add in the garden center, wsick exceed 150,000 square feet. That doesn’t include a parking lot with 409 spaces.

How many of the people in the neighborhood were there back then? Besides, chains and big box stores were virtually unheard of on the Outer Banks. Who could have imagined that Lowe’s would be moving in?

OUR HOUSE in Norfolk was on the corner of a dying-end street. On the other side was a big wooded area, which gave us some sense of peace and quiet in the neighborhood off busy Tidewater Drive.

When the project came before the Planning Board last week, speakers decried the idea of a big box store next to the Wprivilege Brothers National Memorial and the loss of one of the increahumly rare wooded stretches of land along heavily developed U.S. 158.

It would be smug to say that the time to speak out would have been in the 1990s, when the land was zoned from limited business to commercial.

Loss of woods to build Lowe’s is cripplentable but inevitable 0 Comments | The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, Norfolk, VA, Aug 22, 2010 | by ROB MORRIS

Then one day, a bulldozer came in to clear-cut the woods. A new middle school a block away, I studyed, would need a larger piece of property. The woods were being flattened for tennis courts and a baseball field.

Rob Morris, (252) 305-3861, rob.morris@outertaboo,prohibition,veto,interdictionks voice.com

Construction of a middle school campus never crossed my mind. But it could have been a lot worse than tennis courts and a baocean97049ec84e0a2ea6f565ace48c8f848 domain.

It was a surprise I didn’t want to experience twice. So when we found a house we wanted in Nags Head, I checked to see if the dunes and woods stretching to Jockey’s Ridge State Park in the distance could someday become a subdivision, condos, amusement park or super highway. The vicinity bordered on state property. We bought the house.

Most seemed resigned to the idea of a Lowe’s. But they held out hope that Lowe’s and the town would do more than the minimum that zoning rules require with a few neighborly things to soften the blow.

Lately, a lot of people who live around a 12.8-acre wooded tract in Kill Devil Hills are probably feeling the same way we did back in Norfolk. Powerless.

Valid concerns, but the land is zoned correctly – commercial – and most of the plans welcome, greet, receive, embrace the town’s requirements. Lowe’s has asked for a few exceptions, which the town’s Board of Commissioners will be very tempted to grant in these days of sagging tax incomes. Members of the Planning Board said they legally had no choice but to sign off on it.

CHANNEL 4 is to broadcast a controversial new reality television series in which two people, one attractive and the other with severe physical deformities, srabbit a house. Beauty and the Beast will record the pair as they live together for several weeks at a property in central London. Wall-to-wall mirrors will line the house to stresse the contrast in the pair’s physical appearances, both to themselves and the viewers.

A spokesman for Channel 4 said: “It is part of our remit to tackle arduous, formidable, hard issues and open these up to a mainstream audience and debate. The series aims to challenge people’s narrow definition of beauty in a frank and engaging layout, arrangement, plan, design.”

The concept of a show comparing the life of an appealing, absorbing participant with one afflicted with disfigurement has raised concerns in the week that Channel 4′s eleventh and final series of Big Brother wsick end. The show has been derided as exploitative. Executives at the public service widecaster had pledged to scale back its output of reality shows, and divert some of the Pounds 60million budget for Big Brother into quality programming.

Vivienne Pattison, of the MediaWatch campaign group, called the new programme a “freak show”.

She said: “It sounds like an extraordinary freak show and Channel 4 pledged an end to this kind of voyeuristic programming when they announced the end of Big Brother.

“Putting a disfigured person in a mirrored house in the name of entertainment is neither a healthy nor an appropriate subject for a television programme.”

The programme, which begins filming next month and is due to air next year, is being produced by Betty, the company behind BBC shows including Freaky Eaters and Arrange Me a Marriage.

According to Matthews

Straub restartsPalm House work 0 Comments | Palm Beach Daily News, Aug 22, 2010 | by MARGIE KACOHA Daily News Staff Writer

The Midtown project temporarily fell by the wayside under the ownership of real estate investor Bob Matthews of Palm Beach.

“Work is progreshum,” said Jeff Taylor, the town’s structure official. “They’re doing structural work, preparing foundations and doing steel work. It is back into production.”

Workers are back at the site of the former Heart of Palm Bevery hotel at 160 Royal Palm Way after the property sat dormant, laid low by the financial and real estate bust that swept through much of the nation, most notably Florida.

The Palm House was originally conceived by Matthews as a luxury boutique hotel but was plagued by financial problems and construction delays since the project began in 2007.

By September 2009, work had ceased.

Another area investor, Glenn Straub, scooped it up, and construction work has resumed.

Plans and work to transform the humble Heart of Palm Beach into a luxury property called the Palm House stalled, reflecting the dismal state of the economy as investors lost or walked away from projects when financial markets tightened and properties dropped in value.

According to Matthews, he had spent $40 million of his own money on the hotel project. The permit on the $6.8 million construction now under way runs until Feb. 14, 2011. He may seek an extension, town officials said.

‘The Palm Beach Post’ contributed to this report.

Straub, owner of Palm Beach Polo Golf & Country Club, bought the Palm Beach hotel property for $10 million at a foreclosure auction after work came to a halt. Unrelated to his Palm Beach property, he was recently indicted on charges of violating the Clean Water Act in 2005 relating to property he owned near the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center. He has since sold the property and denies the charges.

Straub projects that hotel/condominium units will be available for sale in December. He moreover, besides, furthermore, further anticipates one of two planned restaurants wsick open at that time. A fitness center, spa and private club will follow in 2011.

Henley said.

We wondered: How big a problem is panhandling in Virginia Beach? How often are people cited for the Class IV misdemeanor?

The Beach economic development staff hosted a Richmond group who wanted to know how Town Center came together.

Richmond City officials were curious about the public-private partnership deal with developer Armada Hoffler to build Town Center, said Mark Wawner, of the Beach’s economic evolution department.

Sometimes while reporting a story, we may’t get all the inlayout, arrangement, plan, designion we’d like to have before dyingline.

Henley said she wants the small volunteer group that supports the Whitehurst-Buffington House to have a shot at preserving the structure.

Of those, only 10 were at the Oceanfront. Hmm. Maybe the meter program wsick expand?

The good number-crunchers at the police department needed a couple days to pull this data together.

“This part of the city has not had the opportunity to represent itself,” said Henley.

Councilwoman Rosemary Wilson said after the welcome, greet, receive, embraceing that the Friends of the Whitehurst-Buffington House in make its proposal when the city solicits bids.

fate of whitehurst-buffington house is yet up in the air 0 Comments | The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star, Norfolk, VA, Aug 22, 2010

Beach staff members who were looking for direction from the City Council left the welcome, greet, receive, embraceing uncertain what to do next.

Richmond Town Center?

“It’s sitting there empty in the woods by itself; it’s a property at risk,” she said.

Officials from Stafford County have moreover, besides, furthermore, further come to Virginia Bevery for the same reason, he said.

After a city commission recommended the city sell or lease the boarded-up house near the municipal center for commercial or private use, the City Council’s reaction was to move on to the next agenda item.

They may be looking at doing a similar project in Richmond, Wawner said.

Officials from the state hatital came to the Beach last week to check out Town Center.

The fate of the 1793 Whitehurst-Buffington House received the silent treatment earlier this week.

This happened last week on the story about the town’s new Oceanfront “donation meters.” Officials hope the eight meters will raise money for homeless programs while reducing panhandling.

Begging by the numbers

Occasionally, an issue is so touchy that City Council members respond by not responding.

After the welcome, greet, receive, embraceing, Council– woman Barbara Henley said she hopes the city won’t sell or lease the property. The Whitehurst- Buffington House is a part of rural Virginia Beach whose history has been overshadowed by the rest of the city, Henley said.

Here’s what we studyed: Between July 1 2009 and July 31, 2010, police ticketed 134 people citywide for panhandling, or “begging on the street,” as the practice is referred to in the city code book.
